Over the course of a month I created the game Light Maze. It's a maze game that hinges on your reaction time as you can't stop moving and you can't go backwards. I drew inspiration from the game displayed in Tron where you pilot a light bike and try to get your opponent to run into a trail that follows your bike.
I created a single player game mode where you traverse a maze and avoid obstacles while collecting coins to buy new colors for the maze runner. I also added a two player mode where you play a classic light bike versus game. There are three levels with different maps and the players have to get three wins total to end the game.
I learned a lot while making this game. I was able to expose myself to a pixel art tool called Aseprite. I also learned the importance of starting off with a prototype before going into development. I ran into the development blindly without ever considering if running through a maze as a Tron bike would be fun. Moving forward I will solidify fun mechanics that have more room for gameplay that promotes interesting choices rather than ideas that I haven't proven to work yet.
After several rounds of playtesting I was able to shape the game into a reflex based game that tests your patience. Although it wasn't what I intended it to be, I learned how to plan ahead better for future projects and how to work with a project that doesn't go as expected.
